FOSDEM is the Free and Open Source Software Developers European Meeting, and it is unlike almost every other event on this site. It is completely free to attend, it takes no sponsorship for its programme, and it is run entirely by volunteers under FOSDEM vzw, a Belgian non-profit. It began in 2000 as OSDEM, took its current name in 2001, and has run for more than 25 years at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, drawing over 8,000 developers a year.
The structure is the thing to understand before attending. Alongside two main tracks, held in the Janson auditorium and the K building, the programme is carried by roughly 65 developer rooms, each run by the community behind a project or topic. Recent editions have included devrooms for Rust, Go, Python, LLVM and the GNU toolchain, the Linux kernel, containers, virtualisation, eBPF, RISC-V, databases, security, and a substantial policy strand covering EU legislation, the Cyber Resilience Act and funding the FOSS ecosystem. Each devroom runs its own call for participation on its own timetable, so there is no single conference-wide submission deadline: if you want to speak, find the devroom first and follow its CFP.
Everything is streamed and recorded, which makes FOSDEM unusually easy to follow remotely, though the corridors and the hallway track are most of the point of being there. Dates for 2027 have not been announced. FOSDEM traditionally occupies a Saturday and Sunday at the turn of January into February, and Brussels hotel supply for that weekend goes early, so watch fosdem.org and book as soon as it is confirmed.
