Burlington United States

Burlington is the largest city in Vermont and the home of the University of Vermont, a small state university with a strong tradition in environmental science and computational research. The city sits on a hillside above Lake Champlain, with views across the water to the Adirondack Mountains in New York. The downtown Church Street Marketplace is a pedestrian zone lined with independent restaurants and shops, and Burlington’s food scene - farm-to-table restaurants, craft breweries, and the Burlington Farmers Market - is well above what you’d expect from a city of 45,000 people. For conference attendees, the IC2S2 conference at the Dudley H. Davis Center is directly on the UVM campus, within walking distance of most downtown hotels and restaurants. Late July is the height of summer in New England - warm, green, and with long evenings ideal for lakeside dining.

What to Do

Church Street Marketplace, Lake Champlain waterfront and bike path, ECHO science museum, Burlington Farmers Market (Saturday mornings), Magic Hat brewery tour, kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake, day trip to Stowe (45 min by car), Ben & Jerry’s factory tour in Waterbury (30 min by car), hiking at Camel’s Hump.

Getting There

Burlington International Airport (BTV) is 5km east of downtown, served by American, Delta, United, and JetBlue with connections through Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington. Boston Logan (BOS) is the nearest major hub, 3.5 hours by car or shuttle. No direct Amtrak service to Burlington.

Getting Around

Burlington is small and walkable from end to end - downtown, the UVM campus, and the waterfront are all within 20 minutes on foot. Green Mountain Transit buses cover the wider area. Taxis and rideshares are available. A car is useful for exploring the surrounding Vermont countryside but not needed for the conference itself.

Weather & Timing

June through September for warm weather and the full summer lake culture. Late July (IC2S2 timing) is excellent - farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and kayaking on Lake Champlain. Fall foliage in late September and October is spectacular. Winter brings skiing in the Green Mountains but cold temperatures in town.
