Summary
For conference goers, Montréal blends professional opportunity with cultural exploration, offering a city that is both cosmopolitan and welcoming.
- Old Montreal - Cobblestone streets, the Notre-Dame Basilica (book evening Aura light show), and waterfront restaurants along the Vieux-Port.
- Mount Royal Park - Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also did Central Park); the Chalet lookout gives the classic panoramic view over the city.
- Mile End neighbourhood - The creative heart of the city: St-Viateur Bagel (authentic Montreal-style, baked in wood-fired ovens), indie coffee shops, and record stores.
- Jean-Talon Market - One of the best public markets in North America; excellent for local produce, cheeses, and charcuterie.
- Underground City (RESO) - 33 km of tunnels connecting 80+ city blocks; explore the attached shops and food courts without going outside in winter.
- Plateau-Mont-Royal - The city’s most characterful neighbourhood for dinner; Restaurant Joe Beef and neighbouring spots on Notre-Dame Ouest are worth booking ahead.
Montreal-Trudeau Airport (YUL) is 20 km west. The 747 express bus runs 24 hours to downtown (~10 CAD) and takes 45-60 min. Taxis cost 45-55 CAD. There is no direct rail link to the airport yet (the REM light rail to downtown is under construction). Rideshares run similar prices to taxis.
Montreal’s STM metro runs on 4 colour-coded lines and is clean and frequent. A one-day pass costs ~11 CAD. The underground RESO network connects 80+ blocks of downtown by heated tunnels - vital in winter. The city is very bikeable in summer (Bixi bike-share) and flat by Canadian standards. In winter, budget extra time for everything.
Montreal has two strong conference seasons. Summer (June-August) is warm and festival-filled (20-28C) with long evenings. September-October offers beautiful autumn foliage and pleasant temperatures. Winter (November-March) is brutally cold (-15C or lower) with heavy snow - dress in proper insulated layers and waterproof boots.

▶ 2 past conferences in Montreal
Most Montreal conferences are at or near the Palais des congres in the Quartier International, on the edge of Old Montreal and downtown. Staying downtown between the Palais and the Bell Centre keeps you walkable to the venue and connected to the RESO underground city, which matters in winter. Old Montreal is more atmospheric for evenings and only a short walk away. The McGill and Peel Metro corridor on the green line is the most convenient hotel band.
