Lisbon Portugal

Lisbon sits at the mouth of the Tagus estuary on seven hills, a city that combines Moorish, Manueline, and Art Nouveau architecture with a contemporary food and design culture that has made it one of Europe’s most popular destinations. The historic neighborhoods - Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto, and Belem - each have a distinct character, from the fado clubs of Alfama to the pasteis de nata at Pasteis de Belem. The city rebuilt much of its Pombaline lower town after the 1755 earthquake in a grid of broad avenues and limestone palaces that gives central Lisbon a grandeur unusual for a city of its size. Conference attendees will find excellent value compared to London, Paris, or Amsterdam - hotel prices, restaurant meals, and transport are all significantly cheaper. The ISCTE campus, where KR 2026 is hosted as part of FLoC 2026, is in the northern Entrecampos district, well served by Metro and about 15 minutes from the city center.

What to Do

Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery (UNESCO), Alfama and the Se Cathedral, Miradouro da Graca viewpoint, National Tile Museum (Museu do Azulejo), LX Factory market on Sundays, fado evening in a traditional house, pasteis de nata at Pasteis de Belem, tram 28 through the hills, day trip to Sintra palaces (40 min by train).

Getting There

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is 7km northeast of the city center, connected by Metro line Red (Vermelha) to the Oriente hub and then interchange to other lines (total 20-30 minutes to the center). Taxis take 15-20 minutes without traffic and are inexpensive by European standards.

Getting Around

Lisbon has a Metro network of four lines covering the main areas, plus an extensive tram and bus network operated by Carris. The famous tram 28 covers the historic hills but is heavily touristed - for speed, the Metro is more reliable. The ISCTE campus is served by Metro at Entre Campos station (Yellow line). An Andante rechargeable card covers Metro, trams, and buses.

Weather & Timing

March through June for warm sunny weather (22-25C) without the intense summer heat. October is also excellent. July and August are very hot (30C+) and heavily touristed. The Santos Populares festival in June fills the streets of Alfama with sardines, wine, and dancing - a remarkable time to be in the city.
