Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and its principal port, a Hanseatic trading city that has reinvented itself as a design, media, and cultural capital without losing its distinctly maritime character. The Speicherstadt warehouse district - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and the adjacent HafenCity development sit side by side, one a nineteenth-century brick labyrinth of former spice and coffee warehouses now home to museums and studios, the other a contemporary planned waterfront district still taking shape along the Elbe. The Elbphilharmonie, a landmark concert hall built atop a converted harbor warehouse, has become the defining symbol of modern Hamburg and is worth a visit even without a concert ticket. The Reeperbahn in St. Pauli is Europe’s most famous entertainment district - genuinely lively and tolerant, and nowhere near as seedy as its reputation suggests. For conference attendees, the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) is one of Europe’s largest and most modern conference facilities, positioned centrally near Dammtor S-Bahn station with direct connections from Hamburg Airport and the main rail hub at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof.
Elbphilharmonie plaza and plaza tour, Speicherstadt and Miniatur Wunderland, HafenCity harbor walk, Kunsthalle Hamburg art museum, Alster lake boat rental, fish market on Sunday mornings (from 5am), St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn, Hamburg Dungeon, day trip to Lübeck (45 minutes by train), harbor boat cruise on the Elbe.
Hamburg Airport (HAM) is 8km north of the city center, connected by U-Bahn line U1 to Ohlsdorf and then the Airport Express S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof (30 minutes total, trains every 10 minutes). Taxis to the city center take 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
Hamburg has an excellent HVV integrated transit network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and buses. The Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) is at Dammtor station, served by S-Bahn lines S11, S21, and S31 and a short walk from U-Bahn line U2 at Gänsemarkt. A day pass covers all modes and is the most economical option for conference attendees staying more than a day. The city is also very bikeable along the Elbe and Alster lake paths.
May through September for warm weather, long daylight hours, and the city’s outdoor culture at its best. June - when ISC High Performance is held - is particularly good, with harbor boat tours running full schedules and rooftop bars open. Winter is mild by German standards but gray; the Christmas markets (late November through December) around the Rathausmarkt are excellent.
