With its mix of tradition, modern culture, and scenic escapes, Daegu is an excellent city to turn a conference trip into a memorable travel experience.
Seomun Market is one of the largest traditional markets in Korea, with a covered night market popular with locals. Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Cultural Center explores Daegu’s historic role as the center of traditional Korean medicine. Apsan Park has a cable car and walking paths above the city. Daegu is famous throughout Korea for its makguksu (buckwheat noodles), flat dumplings (napjak mandu), and as the hub of Korea’s textile and fashion industry. The Chimac Festival (chicken and beer) is a major summer event.
Daegu International Airport (TAE) is 5 km from the city center with domestic flights from Gimpo and Jeju, and some international service to Japan and China. KTX high-speed rail connects Daegu to Seoul in about 1 hour 40 minutes and to Busan in about 25 minutes, making the train often more practical than flying.
Daegu Metro (3 lines) covers the main areas of the city. Taxis and Kakao T (South Korea’s rideshare/taxi app) are widely available and inexpensive. The Dongseongno entertainment district is walkable.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the best periods for comfortable temperatures and lower humidity. Summers are notably hotter than other Korean cities due to Daegu’s inland location in a basin - temperatures regularly reach 35-38C in July and August. Winters are cold but drier than the coasts.
