Cambridge United Kingdom
Cambridge is one of the world’s most recognizable university cities, home to the University of Cambridge and a research ecosystem that has produced more Nobel laureates than most countries. The city center is compact and almost entirely flat, built around the ancient colleges that back onto the River Cam - the Backs, where the gardens of King’s, Trinity, and St John’s colleges meet the river, are among the most photographed spaces in England. For conference attendees, the city is remarkably easy to navigate on foot or by bike, and the density of pubs, restaurants, and cafes within a few minutes of any central hotel makes evening socialising effortless. The city has a strong tech industry presence alongside the university - ARM, Marshall, and hundreds of spinouts are based in the Cambridge Cluster - which gives it an unusually high concentration of both academic and industry researchers. London is 50 minutes by train from Cambridge station, making it practical to combine a conference stay with time in the capital.
Punting on the River Cam, King’s College Chapel and the Backs, Fitzwilliam Museum, Trinity College and the Wren Library, Cambridge Market Square, The Eagle pub (Watson and Crick announced DNA structure here), Kettle’s Yard gallery, cycling the towpath to Grantchester, day trip to Ely Cathedral (20 min by train).
London Stansted Airport (STN) is 35km south and the most convenient option for budget flights, connected by the Stansted Express train to Cambridge (35 minutes, trains every 30 minutes). London Heathrow (LHR) is 90 minutes by National Express coach or train via London. London Gatwick (LGW) is similar. Cambridge itself has no commercial airport.
Cambridge city center is almost entirely walkable - most colleges, conference venues, and restaurants are within 20 minutes on foot. Cycling is extremely common and there are bike rental options near the station. The train station is about 25 minutes walk from the city center or a short taxi ride. Local buses (Stagecoach) cover the wider city.
May through September for warm weather and the full collegiate atmosphere. June is particularly good - the famous May Balls (college formal events) and the river at its liveliest. The MobiSys conference falls in late June, an excellent time with long evenings and outdoor punting on the Cam. Winter is mild but gray; the Christmas market is modest compared to continental Europe.
