Boston United States

Boston is one of America’s oldest and most storied cities, founded in 1630 on a peninsula in Massachusetts Bay. Home to world-class universities including MIT and Harvard just across the Charles River, it has a culture shaped by intellectual ambition, Revolutionary history, and fierce civic pride. The city’s compact, walkable neighborhoods reward exploration: Beacon Hill’s brick rowhouses and gas-lit streets, the Italian bakeries and restaurants of the North End, the galleries and theatres of the South End, and the new energy of the Seaport District along the waterfront. For conference travelers, Boston is exceptionally easy to navigate, with Logan Airport minutes from downtown and a reliable subway. The Seaport District, where many technology and science conferences are held, sits just across the Reserved Channel from downtown and has exploded with hotels, restaurants, and event venues over the past decade. Museums abound, from the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to the MIT Museum and the Harvard Natural History Museum. Baseball at Fenway Park, seafood at the harbor, and a legendary craft beer scene round out the off-conference hours.

What to Do
  • Freedom Trail - A 4 km walking route connecting 16 Revolutionary War-era sites; do it self-guided with the map rather than a tour for better pacing.
  • Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - One of the most idiosyncratic and beautiful art museums in the world; the courtyard alone is worth the visit.
  • Harvard Square and campus - 20 minutes from downtown by Red Line; free self-guided walks through the yard, excellent bookshops, and the Harvard Art Museums.
  • North End - Boston’s Italian-American neighbourhood; Mike’s Pastry for cannoli, Neptune Oyster for the best lobster roll, and Hanover Street for an espresso.
  • Day trip to Salem - 30 minutes by commuter rail; the witch trials history is well-presented and the Peabody Essex Museum has a world-class collection.
  • Fenway Park tour - Tours run year-round; even non-baseball fans find the history and architecture of America’s oldest active ballpark genuinely interesting.
Getting There

Logan International (BOS) is just 4 km from downtown - one of the most central major airports in the US. The Silver Line bus runs free from the terminals to South Station (20 min). The Blue Line Metro from Airport station reaches downtown in 10 min (~2.40 USD). Taxis run 25-40 USD. Rideshares are available from dedicated pick-up areas.

Getting Around

Boston’s MBTA (the T) is the oldest metro system in the US and covers the main conference and university areas. CharlieCard for discounted fares (~2.40 USD/ride). The city is also highly walkable - many academic venues in Cambridge (Harvard, MIT) are accessible from central Boston on foot or by Red Line (20 min). Rideshare is widely used for gaps.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal: clear weather, 12-20C, and the famous New England foliage in fall. Summer (June-August) is warm and pleasant (22-28C). Winter conferences (December-February) deal with cold (-5 to 5C) and potential snow - New England winters can be severe. Always check the forecast in winter.
