Bari Italy
Bari is the main city of Puglia, sitting on the heel of Italy’s boot on the Adriatic coast. It divides neatly into two contrasting zones: Barivecchia, the ancient fishing quarter, a dense maze of whitewashed alleys where elderly women still make orecchiette pasta by hand on their doorsteps; and the nineteenth-century Murat grid, a rational planned city of wide boulevards and Liberty-style palaces built under Bourbon rule. The Basilica di San Nicola, one of the most important pilgrimage churches in southern Europe, anchors the old town and draws visitors year-round. Food is the main draw for most visitors: Puglia produces the majority of Italy’s olive oil and durum wheat, and Bari’s seafood - raw sea urchin, grilled octopus, and tiella rice - is exceptional. The city is increasingly accessible from northern Europe with direct budget flights, and its position makes it a natural base for exploring the trulli of Alberobello, the caves of Matera, and the Salento peninsula. For conference attendees, Bari is a genuinely rewarding destination that remains far less visited than comparable Italian cities.
Barivecchia (old town) wandering and orecchiette watching, Basilica di San Nicola, Bari Cathedral, Castello Svevo, Lungomare seafront promenade, fresh seafood at the old port market, day trips to Alberobello trulli (1h by train), Matera cave city (1h30m by bus), Polignano a Mare cliff village (30min by train), Lecce Baroque architecture (1h30m by train).
Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI) is 8km northwest of the city center, connected by the Ferrotramviaria airport train to Bari Centrale station (every 30 minutes, journey 15 minutes). Multiple airlines serve Bari from London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, and other European hubs.
Bari city center is walkable - the old town, main hotels, and seafront promenade are all within 2km. Local buses (AMTAB) cover the wider city. Taxis are available from ranks near the station and old port. The Ferrotramviaria trains connect Bari to the airport and to towns in the interior of Puglia. Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect Bari to Naples (3h30m) and Rome (4h).
April through June for warm, dry weather without summer crowds or heat. October is also excellent - warm sea, quiet beaches, and the olive harvest in the surrounding countryside. July and August are hot (30C+) and busy with Italian domestic tourists. The ISWC conference in late October falls in ideal conditions.
