Athens Greece
Athens offers a conference experience unlike any other European city - the Acropolis and Parthenon are a short metro or taxi ride from the main conference hotels, and the city’s archaeological richness makes any free afternoon worth taking. Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) has direct connections to most major European cities and many long-haul destinations, and is roughly 40 minutes from the city centre by metro. The city’s main conference hotels cluster along Syngrou Avenue, a broad boulevard connecting the city centre to the coastal suburb of Palaio Faliro, with good metro access at Syngrou-Fix station. The Plaka neighbourhood - the historic old town beneath the Acropolis - is within walking distance of the main hotels and worth an evening exploring, with dozens of restaurants and bars along Adrianou Street. Late October and November in Athens bring mild temperatures (average highs 18-22 degrees Celsius), clear skies, and significantly smaller tourist crowds than the summer peak - one of the most pleasant times to visit.
The Acropolis and the Parthenon remain among the most impressive ancient monuments in the world - the new Acropolis Museum at the base of the hill provides essential context and houses many of the original sculptures. The Ancient Agora, the Kerameikos cemetery, and the Temple of Hephaestus form an impressive complex of classical-era remains in the center of the city. Monastiraki flea market and the surrounding Psyri and Exarcheia neighborhoods have the best street food, tavernas, and late-night bars. Athens has undergone a significant cultural and culinary revival since the mid-2010s; the food scene is now genuinely exciting, with excellent modern Greek restaurants throughout the center.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) is 35 km east of the city center. Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) connects the airport directly to Monastiraki and Syntagma in about 45 minutes - fast, reliable, and the standard option for most arrivals. Taxis and rideshare are available for a 30-45 minute drive.
The Athens Metro (3 lines) covers the main attractions including the Acropolis (Akropoli station), Monastiraki, and Syntagma Square. OASA buses cover wider areas. The historic center is walkable though hilly in places. Rideshare (Beat, Uber) is widely available and affordable.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) are ideal for Athens, with comfortable temperatures of 18-25C and clear skies. Summers are very hot (35-40C in July-August) and crowded, though popular for island hopping add-ons. Winters are mild and the main sites are uncrowded.
