Xiamen China
Xiamen is one of China’s most livable cities, an island metropolis off the Fujian coast facing the Taiwan Strait. Long a trading port, it keeps a relaxed, green character unusual for Chinese cities of its size: colonial-era architecture on car-free Gulangyu Island (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the palm-lined campus of Xiamen University, and a coastal ring road built for cycling. It is a growing conference destination with a large exhibition center on the island’s east shore. Summers are hot and humid with typhoon-season storms; autumn brings the reliable blue-sky weather.
- Gulangyu Island - the UNESCO-listed, vehicle-free island of colonial villas, piano museums, and winding lanes; take the ferry and stay for sunset.
- Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple - one of China’s most beautiful campuses beside a working Buddhist temple with hillside views.
- Huandao Road - the island’s coastal ring, best by bicycle, with beaches and sculpture parks along the way.
- Shapowei and Zhongshan Road - the creative-harbor district’s cafes and the arcaded shopping street of the old town.
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) sits on the island’s north shore, 20-30 minutes from the main hotel districts, with direct flights across Asia and to a handful of intercontinental hubs, plus dense domestic connections. A new airport on nearby Xiang’an is under construction and will eventually take over international traffic.
The metro (several lines) and the elevated BRT cover the island efficiently, and DiDi ride-hailing is cheap and everywhere. Ferries shuttle to Gulangyu from the ferry terminals - buy tickets in advance on busy days. The Huandao Road coastal path is best explored by rented bike. Have a translation app and mobile payments (Alipay/WeChat Pay accept foreign cards) set up before arrival.
October to December is the sweet spot: dry, sunny, 18-26C. Spring is mild but wetter. July and August are hot (30-35C), humid, and within typhoon season, so summer conference-goers should pack for heat and watch forecasts. Avoid Chinese national holidays (early October, Lunar New Year) when the island fills with domestic tourists.
