What to Do

Te Papa Tongarewa (Museum of New Zealand) on the Wellington waterfront is the national museum and one of the most important cultural institutions in the Pacific region, with outstanding Maori taonga (treasures) and natural history collections, free to enter. The Wellington Cable Car and Botanic Garden offer the classic city-to-harbor panorama. Courtenay Place and the Cuba Street area have the best concentration of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and live music venues. Wellington is the craft beer capital of New Zealand. The Zealandia ecosanctuary, 2 km from the city center, is a genuine wildlife haven with tuatara, kaka, and other native species visible on guided evening tours.

Getting There

Wellington International Airport (WLG) is 8 km from the CBD, with the Airport Flyer (No. 2 route) bus connecting to the city in about 25-30 minutes. Taxis and rideshare are also available for a 15-minute drive in light traffic. The airport is notoriously windy - flight delays from crosswinds are not uncommon.

Getting Around

Wellington is compact and walkable in the CBD and Te Aro neighborhoods. Metlink buses cover the wider city and the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast suburbs. The Cable Car (funicular) connects Lambton Quay to Kelburn and the Botanic Garden. Rideshare (Uber) is available throughout the city.

Weather & Timing

December to April (southern hemisphere summer and early autumn) offers the most stable weather, with temperatures around 17-22C and long daylight hours. Wellington is famously windy year-round (hence “Windy Welly”) - wind is a constant factor regardless of season. The city is lively and walkable in all weather thanks to its compact, sheltered-harbor geography.
