The City of Arts and Sciences (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciencies) is Santiago Calatrava’s extraordinary futuristic complex of an opera house, science museum, and oceanarium - one of the most striking architectural ensembles in Europe. The Central Market (Mercado Central) is a stunning Modernisme building housing one of Spain’s best fresh food markets. The old city around the Cathedral and the Llotja de la Seda (Silk Exchange, UNESCO World Heritage) is compact and beautiful. Valencia is the home of paella - the authentic version is made with rabbit, chicken, and green beans, not seafood, and the best versions are eaten at Sunday lunch in the Albufera lagoon area restaurants.
Valencia Airport (VLC) is about 9 km from the city center. The Metro Line 3 and Line 5 connect the airport to the city in about 25 minutes; taxis and rideshare are also available for a 15-20 minute journey.
Valencia has an excellent EMT bus network, a metro/tram system, and one of the best urban cycling infrastructures in Spain. The historic center, the City of Arts and Sciences, and the beachfront are all connected by cycling paths. The old town around the Central Market is very walkable. Rideshare (Cabify) is available.
Spring (March-May) is superb for Valencia, including the famous Las Fallas festival in March (but very crowded). Autumn (September-October) is also excellent and quieter. Summers are hot and sunny with sea breezes keeping the coast tolerable. March weather can be variable but the city is alive with events.
