What to Do

The Dom Tower (Domtoren) is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and Utrecht’s defining landmark - guided tours climb to the top for views across the city and to Amsterdam and the Rhine delta. The unique canal-level wharf cellars (werfkelders) have been converted into restaurants and cafes at water level - the Oudegracht canal with its two-level quays is unlike any other Dutch canal. The Centraal Museum has strong collections including Gerrit Rietveld’s applied art and the Rietveld Schroder House (UNESCO listed, nearby, bookable). De Helling and TivoliVredenburg are major live music venues. The city’s food scene is excellent and varied for its size.

Getting There

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is the main gateway, about 40 km northwest. The intercity train connects Schiphol directly to Utrecht Centraal in about 30 minutes. Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) and Eindhoven Airport (EIN) are alternative options further south.

Getting Around

Utrecht is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the world - the main train station sits atop one of the world’s largest bicycle parking facilities. The canal-lined Singel and Oudegracht areas are very walkable. U-OV buses and the train network cover wider journeys. The compact historic center is easily explored on foot.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and summer are best for cycling and canal culture. The Dutch Windmill Day in May and the various canal events in summer are popular. Winters are mild but grey; the Christmas market around the Dom Tower is atmospheric. The city is pleasant year-round but spring and summer are when outdoor cafe culture peaks.
