Uppsala Sweden

Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city and its oldest university town, about 40 minutes north of Stockholm. It grew up around Uppsala University, founded in 1477 and the oldest in Scandinavia, and the city still revolves around student life, research, and a strong intellectual tradition. Its skyline is dominated by the twin spires of Uppsala Cathedral, the largest church in the Nordic countries, with the pink Uppsala Castle on the hill above and the Fyris river running through a compact, walkable center. The botanist Carl Linnaeus lived and worked here, and his gardens are still open to visitors, while just outside the city Gamla Uppsala holds the great royal burial mounds of the Viking age. For conference travelers it is calm, green, and easy to get around, and Stockholm Arlanda Airport is unusually close, only about 20 minutes away.

What to Do
  • Uppsala Cathedral - The largest church in the Nordic countries, with the tombs of Swedish kings and Carl Linnaeus.
  • Uppsala University and the Gustavianum - The historic university and its museum, including the famous anatomical theatre.
  • Uppsala Castle - The pink hilltop castle with views over the city and an art museum.
  • The Linnaeus Garden - The restored botanical garden of Carl Linnaeus in the city center.
  • Gamla Uppsala - The great royal burial mounds and museum just north of the city, one of Scandinavia’s most important Viking-age sites.
Getting There

Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is only about 35 km south of Uppsala, between the city and Stockholm, which makes it one of the most convenient airports for any Swedish city. Frequent SL commuter trains and airport buses reach Uppsala Centralstation in around 20 minutes, and central Stockholm is about 40 minutes away by direct train.

Getting Around

Uppsala is compact, flat, and made for walking and cycling, the standard way to get around a Swedish city. City buses cover the wider area, and Uppsala Centralstation sits in the center with frequent trains to Stockholm and the airport. There is no metro, and a contactless card or the local transit app works on the buses.

Weather & Timing

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the best time, with mild temperatures, green surroundings, and very long daylight hours around midsummer. August, when ICER is held, is comfortable Nordic summer, usually around 18 to 22C with long evenings. Winters are cold, dark, and often snowy.
