Tarragona’s Roman remains are UNESCO-listed and among the best-preserved in the Iberian Peninsula: the amphitheatre (overlooking the sea), the Roman Circus (under the medieval city), and the Archaeological Museum form a remarkable whole. The Balco del Mediterrani is a clifftop promenade overlooking the sea with views along the Costa Daurada. The Cathedral, a transitional Romanesque-Gothic building, and the adjoining cloister are architecturally important. The beach at Platja del Miracle beneath the amphitheatre is unusually close to the historic city. Barcelona is an easy and rewarding day trip by frequent train service.
Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is the main gateway, about 90 km northeast of Tarragona. Regional trains (Rodalies) connect Barcelona-Sants to Tarragona in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Reus Airport (REU) is just 15 km from Tarragona with budget carrier service from select European cities.
Tarragona has a local bus network (EMT Tarragona) and the central old city is very walkable. The Roman sites cluster in the historic center and along the cliff-top Balco del Mediterrani. Taxis are available. Barcelona is an easy day trip by train.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer warm Mediterranean weather with lower tourist numbers than summer. Summer is hot but the coastal position provides breezes; the Tarragona Human Tower (Castellers) competition in September is a UNESCO-listed local tradition.
