Summary:
For conference attendees, Taipei is more than a meeting destination. It is a city where work, culture, and relaxation come together—making it well worth extending your stay to experience all it has to offer.
Taipei 101, until recently the world’s tallest building, has an observation deck with views over the entire Taipei basin and surrounding mountains. The National Palace Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Chinese imperial artifacts, many brought from Beijing’s Forbidden City - plan at least half a day. Jiufen, a mountainside old mining town 45 minutes from the city, has dramatic views and was the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. The night market culture is essential - Shilin, Raohe, and Ningxia night markets each have their own specialities; stinky tofu, oyster vermicelli, and pineapple cake are local signatures.
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the main international hub, about 40 km west of central Taipei. The MRT Airport Express connects directly to Taipei Main Station in about 35 minutes. Songshan Airport (TSA) handles domestic routes and some regional East Asian flights, located within the city itself.
Taipei’s MRT (metro) is one of the best in Asia - clean, punctual, and covering virtually every major destination in the city. EasyCard contactless payment works across the MRT, buses, and YouBike cycle hire. The city is dense and walkable in the main districts. Uber and local taxis are available throughout.
Autumn (October-December) is generally the most pleasant, with lower humidity and temperatures around 22-28C. Spring (March-April) is also good. Summer (June-September) is very hot and humid with regular typhoons and occasional flooding. January-February can be cool, grey, and rainy.
