What to Do
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge climb - The guided climb to the summit arch is expensive but gives unmatched 360-degree views; book well ahead.
  • Opera House tour - The architecture is extraordinary from outside, but a guided interior tour reveals a building that’s even more remarkable inside.
  • Bondi to Coogee coastal walk - A 6 km cliff-top walk passing several beaches; best done in the morning with a coffee stop at Bronte or Clovelly.
  • Taronga Zoo - Best zoo in Australia with extraordinary harbour views; the cable car gondola from the ferry wharf is the right arrival approach.
  • The Rocks market - Weekend market in the historic sandstone precinct beneath the Harbour Bridge; good for Australian arts and crafts.
  • Blue Mountains day trip - 90 minutes west by train to Katoomba; the Three Sisters rock formation and Scenic World cable car and railway are worth the journey.
Getting There

Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) is 8 km from the CBD. The Airport Link train reaches Central Station in 13 min (~20-22 AUD - expensive by Australian standards). Taxis and rideshares (Uber) cost 35-55 AUD to the CBD. The Opal card used for regular trains cannot be used for the airport link - buy a separate ticket or use contactless.

Getting Around

Sydney’s Opal card covers trains, buses, ferries, and light rail - tap on and off for each journey. The CBD and inner suburbs are well covered. The Harbour Bridge and Opera House area is walkable from the CBD. Ferries across the harbour are scenic and practical. Rideshare is reliable throughout.

Weather & Timing

Sydney’s climate is temperate year-round. Summer (December-February) is hot (25-35C) with occasional humidity. Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) are ideal for conferences at 18-26C with low rainfall. Winter (June-August) is mild (12-17C) and dry - very comfortable by most standards, just bring a jacket for evenings.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Sydney’s technical conferences are mostly at the ICC in Darling Harbour or the UTS campus by Central station, both in or beside the CBD. Staying in the CBD, Darling Harbour, or Haymarket keeps both walkable and puts you on the light rail and train network. Pyrmont, just across from the ICC, is a quieter option a few minutes walk over the pedestrian bridge. The CBD connects to the airport by the 13-minute Airport Link train.
