Swansea United Kingdom

Swansea curves around a five-mile bay on the south Wales coast, a friendly, unpretentious city that produced Dylan Thomas and keeps his memory in its Maritime Quarter. The real spectacle starts next door: the Gower peninsula, Britain’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, whose beaches (Rhossili above all) appear on world lists. The university’s beachfront Bay Campus and city venues host academic events; MobileHCI 2026 brings HCI here in early September, the best month of the Welsh year.

What to Do
  • Rhossili Bay and Worm’s Head - the Gower’s showpiece; go at low tide and allow a half day.
  • Mumbles - the lighthouse village at the bay’s end, ice cream and pier included.
  • Dylan Thomas Centre - the poet’s story in the Maritime Quarter.
  • Three Cliffs Bay - the postcard cove, a short bus and walk away.
Getting There

Cardiff Airport (CWL) is about an hour away; Bristol (BRS) 90 minutes; Heathrow about 3 hours by rail or coach. Many visitors simply train from London.

Getting Around

The center is walkable; buses reach the university campuses and the Gower; taxis are cheap. Direct trains run to Cardiff (1 hour) and London Paddington (about 3 hours).

Weather & Timing

May to September is the window; early September is often the finest stretch (16-20C, golden light on the Gower). Always pack a rain layer in Wales.
