Suzhou is known as the “Venice of the East” for its network of ancient canals and is home to nine UNESCO-listed classical Chinese gardens. The Humble Administrator’s Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) and the Lingering Garden (Liu Yuan) are the most impressive, with centuries-old layouts of pavilions, rockeries, and ponds. Pingjiang Road is a well-preserved canal-side street with tea houses, silk shops, and local restaurants. The Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M. Pei (a Suzhou native), is architecturally remarkable. Shanghai is just 30 minutes away by high-speed rail for day trips.
Suzhou does not have its own commercial airport. The closest is Shanghai Hongqiao Airport (SHA), about 80 km east, reachable in about 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Suzhou Station. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is also accessible via high-speed rail in about 45 minutes.
Suzhou has two metro lines covering the main districts, including the ancient canal area and the high-tech industrial zone. Didi rideshare and taxis are inexpensive and widely available. The classical garden district and old city canal area is walkable once you arrive.
Spring (March-May) is the best time for Suzhou, particularly April when the classical gardens are in full bloom. Autumn (October-November) is also excellent with comfortable temperatures. Summers are hot and humid; winters are cool and can be damp.
