Strasbourg France

Strasbourg sits at the crossroads of French and German cultures in the Alsace region of northeastern France, on the Rhine River border with Germany. The city is home to the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the European Court of Human Rights, giving it an outsized international significance for its size. The Grande Ile historic district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site centered on the rose-sandstone Notre-Dame Cathedral and the La Petite France neighborhood of 16th-century timber-framed houses along the river canals. Alsatian cuisine blends the best of French and German cooking: choucroute garnie, tarte flambee, and baeckeoffe alongside excellent local Rieslings and Gewurztraminers from the nearby Alsace wine route. Strasbourg is one of the most accessible European conference cities by rail, with TGV trains reaching Paris in under 2 hours, Frankfurt in 1h10, and connecting services to Amsterdam, Brussels, and Zurich. The city’s tram network is extensive and links the train station, European Quarter, and conference venues without needing a car.

What to Do
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral and Platform - The cathedral’s astronomical clock is one of the engineering marvels of the Renaissance; the rooftop platform gives views across the Rhine into Germany.

  • La Petite France - The best-preserved medieval tanner and miller district in Alsace, with canal-side half-timbered houses and a well-preserved covered bridges complex.

  • Alsace Wine Route - The Route des Vins d’Alsace begins at Marlenheim, about 20 km from Strasbourg, passing through wine villages to Colmar and Mulhouse.

  • European Parliament visit - Free visits to the hemicycle are offered during non-session weeks; sessions are open to the public by prior registration.

  • Musee d’Art Moderne et Contemporain - A strong permanent collection of modern and contemporary art in a striking glass building on the river opposite the historic center.

Getting There

Strasbourg Airport (SXB) serves Paris CDG (Air France, multiple daily), Amsterdam (KLM), Munich (Lufthansa), and London (British Airways). For broader connectivity, Mulhouse/Basel-Freiburg Airport (EAP/BSL/MLH), 80 km south, is a major Ryanair and EasyJet hub. Paris CDG is under 2 hours by TGV from Strasbourg station.

Getting Around

Strasbourg’s tram network covers the city comprehensively, with six lines connecting the central station to the European Quarter, hospital, and university areas. Walking is excellent in the Grande Ile historic center. Cycling is very popular on a well-developed network of protected lanes. The Velhop bike-share scheme is affordable and widely used.

Weather & Timing

Late May through September is ideal for Strasbourg, with warm sunny weather and long evenings. The famous Christmas market (late November to December) draws large crowds but is a genuine highlight. October conferences coincide with harvest season in the nearby Alsace wine villages.
