Singapore Singapore
Singapore is a city where sleek skyscrapers, lush green spaces, and vibrant neighborhoods all sit within minutes of each other. Known for its efficiency and cleanliness, it also offers a depth of culture and flavor that rewards anyone who stays beyond the conference schedule. They arrived for the event but quickly discovered that exploring here is effortless. Mornings might start with a walk through the Gardens by the Bay, where futuristic Supertrees tower over colorful flower domes, or a visit to the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for sweeping city views. The hawker centers became an instant favorite — from Maxwell Food Centre’s famous chicken rice to the laksa stalls at Katong, each meal felt like an introduction to a new side of the city. Evenings often meant watching the light show at Marina Bay, sipping a cocktail at a rooftop bar like Ce La Vi, or dining along the Singapore River in Clarke Quay. A morning in the UNESCO-listed Botanic Gardens brought a slower pace, while Orchard Road’s endless shopping malls offered a burst of air-conditioned comfort and designer finds. For a taste of Singapore’s heritage, they wandered through Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam, each with its own architecture, markets, and food specialties. A short ferry ride to Sentosa Island added beaches, attractions, and resort escapes just minutes from downtown. Singapore’s mix of modernity, tradition, and tropical beauty turns a work trip into a truly global experience.
- Gardens by the Bay - The Supertree Grove light show runs nightly and is free; the indoor Cloud Forest conservatory is worth the entry fee.
- Hawker centres - Maxwell Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat are the best introductions to Singapore’s extraordinary street food culture at very low prices.
- Marina Bay Sands SkyPark - The observation deck gives one of the best city views in Asia; the infinity pool is for hotel guests only.
- Chinatown and Little India - Two distinct neighbourhoods within walking distance of each other, worth a half-day of exploration.
- Sentosa Island - Beach clubs, Universal Studios, and a cable car across the strait; easy half-day trip from the city centre.
- National Gallery Singapore - One of the finest collections of Southeast Asian art in the world, housed in the former Supreme Court and City Hall.
Changi Airport (SIN) is one of the world’s best airports and just 20 km from the city centre. The MRT Airport line reaches Tanah Merah (connecting to City Hall) in about 30 min (~2.20 SGD / ~1.60 USD). Taxis and Grab (the local rideshare) cost 20-35 SGD and take 25-40 min depending on traffic.
Singapore’s MRT is clean, air-conditioned, and covers all major conference and hotel areas. Store a travel card value on an EZ-Link card. The city-state is also very walkable in air-conditioned underground malls and covered walkways that connect major buildings. Grab is affordable for short hops. Buses cover gaps in the MRT network.
Singapore is hot and humid year-round (28-33C) with no real dry season, though February-April tends to have slightly less rainfall. Bring light breathable clothing and carry an umbrella - short tropical downpours are common any month. Conference centres are heavily air-conditioned so a light layer for indoors is useful.
