Shanghai China

Shanghai, China’s largest city, sits on the country’s eastern coast where the Huangpu River meets the mighty Yangtze and flows into the East China Sea. A true global hub, it’s a city where futuristic skyscrapers light up the skyline while narrow alleyways hide steaming dumpling shops and buzzing markets. From the historic charm of the Bund to the neon dazzle of Pudong, Shanghai hums with energy—blending tradition and innovation in a way that feels endlessly alive.

What to Do

The Bund waterfront promenade offers the classic view of the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River - it looks different at every hour of the day. Xintiandi is a preserved shikumen (stone gate house) neighborhood converted into restaurants and bars. The Shanghai Museum in People’s Square has one of the finest collections of Chinese art and artifacts in the world, free to enter. Yu Garden in the Old City has beautiful classical Chinese garden architecture. The food scene in Shanghai spans everything from xiao long bao (soup dumplings) at Din Tai Fung to innovative contemporary Chinese cooking throughout the French Concession.

Getting There

Pudong International Airport (PVG) serves most international flights and connects to the city via the Maglev train (7 minutes to Longyang Road metro station, though the inner-city journey then continues on metro) or metro Line 2 (about 60-70 minutes to People’s Square). Hongqiao Airport (SHA) handles domestic and regional flights, connecting to the city center in 30 minutes by metro.

Getting Around

Shanghai Metro is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive metro systems, with 20+ lines covering virtually every part of the city. Didi (rideshare) is widely available. Taxis are plentiful and metered. The Bund, Xintiandi, and Lujiazui areas are walkable; most cross-city trips are best done on metro.

Weather & Timing

Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) are the most pleasant, with comfortable temperatures and good visibility. Summers are very hot and humid (35C+ in July-August) with occasional typhoon influence. Winters are cold and damp but rarely extremely cold.
