San Mateo United States

San Mateo is a Bay Area city in San Mateo County on the western shore of San Francisco Bay, roughly midway between San Francisco and San Jose. The city is served by the Caltrain commuter rail line, making it about 35 minutes from San Francisco’s Caltrain terminal and 20 minutes from San Jose Diridon station. San Mateo is a practical choice for Bay Area conferences: less congested than San Francisco with a more affordable hotel market, and a compact downtown of restaurants, cafes, and hotels around the train station and the San Mateo County Event Center. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 15 minutes north by road and is connected by the BART-SFO shuttle and the SFO AirTrain to regional transit.

What to Do
  • Coyote Point Recreation Area - Bayfront park with a beach, windsurfing, and the CuriOdyssey science museum, about 10 minutes from downtown.

  • Hillsdale Shopping Center and its surroundings - Large regional mall with good dining options nearby.

  • Japanese Tea Garden - Central Park’s small Japanese garden is a pleasant break from conference sessions.

  • Day trip to San Francisco - 35 minutes by Caltrain to 4th and King station, then a short Muni or walk to Union Square, the Ferry Building, or SOMA.

Getting There

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 15 minutes north by road or about 30 minutes by BART to Millbrae then Caltrain to San Mateo. San Jose International Airport (SJC) is about 25 minutes south by car.

Getting Around
