San Francisco United States

San Francisco, California

A vibrant city by the bay, San Francisco blends iconic landmarks, diverse neighborhoods, and cultural energy that make it a top destination for conference travelers.

Highlights for Visitors

  • Golden Gate Bridge – the city’s world-famous symbol with scenic walks and viewpoints.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39 – lively waterfront with dining, sea lions, and attractions.
  • Alcatraz Island – historic former prison with panoramic views of the bay.
  • Chinatown & North Beach – explore bustling markets, authentic dining, and cultural heritage.
  • Union Square – central hub for shopping, theaters, and major hotels.
  • Golden Gate Park – expansive green space with museums, gardens, and trails.
  • Mission District – colorful murals, eclectic dining, and vibrant nightlife.

Perfect For

  • Conference attendees who want to add leisure days before or after events.
  • Food lovers seeking world-class dining and local flavors.
  • Explorers who enjoy both cultural neighborhoods and outdoor adventures.
What to Do
  • Golden Gate Bridge - Walk or cycle across from the Marin Headlands side for the best views back over the city and bay.
  • Ferry Building Marketplace - Saturday farmers’ market is outstanding; the building’s permanent food vendors are excellent any day of the week.
  • Mission District - The best neighbourhood for burritos (La Taqueria, El Farolito), street murals along Clarion Alley, and independent bookshops.
  • Alcatraz - Book tickets weeks ahead; the audio tour narrated by former guards and inmates is genuinely excellent.
  • Marin Headlands day trip - 30 minutes by car or bike over the bridge; dramatic coastal views and trails above the Pacific.
  • Napa or Sonoma day trip - 1-1.5 hours north by car; some of the world’s most celebrated wineries with tasting room visits.
Getting There

San Francisco International (SFO) is 21 km south. BART from SFO to downtown takes 30 min (~10 USD). Oakland Airport (OAK) often has cheaper flights - take BART from the Coliseum station (connected by shuttle, ~15 min). San Jose (SJC) serves South Bay venues and is 50 min by Caltrain. Uber/Lyft from SFO to downtown runs 35-55 USD.

Getting Around

BART covers the airport and many neighbourhoods but has gaps in the west and north of the city. Muni buses and light rail fill most gaps. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is heavily used and reliable. The city is hilly - walking is often fine but distances between neighbourhoods can be longer than they look. Parking is expensive and scarce downtown.

Weather & Timing

San Francisco’s weather is counterintuitive - summer (June-August) is often cool and foggy, especially in the western neighbourhoods. The warmest, sunniest months are September-October (‘Indian summer’). Winter conferences (December-February) are mild (10-15C) with occasional rain. Always bring a layer regardless of season - evenings cool sharply.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Most San Francisco conferences are at the Moscone Center or nearby hotels in SoMa and Union Square, so staying in those districts means you can walk to the venue. Union Square has the densest cluster of hotels at every price point and direct BART and Muni access. The Embarcadero and Financial District are a calmer, business-oriented alternative a short walk or one Muni stop away. Be cautious booking purely on price in the blocks bordering the Tenderloin just west of Union Square, which can feel rough after dark.
