Rome Italy
Rome, the Eternal City, is Italy’s capital and home to over 2.8 million people. The city hosts Sapienza University, one of Europe’s largest universities with a strong computer science faculty, along with CNR and other major research institutions. Rome is well-connected internationally via Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, with direct flights from most major hubs. The city centre is compact and walkable, with excellent metro and bus links. Attendees will find no shortage of accommodation, dining, and cultural attractions within easy reach of any conference venue.
The Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are unmissable and genuinely awe-inspiring regardless of how many photos you’ve seen. Vatican City - St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel - is a half-day minimum and requires advance booking for the museums. The Borghese Gallery (book months ahead) has the finest collection of Bernini sculptures in the world in a villa setting. Trastevere is the most atmospheric neighborhood for evening dining. Roman food is its own tradition: cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, supplì (fried rice balls), and pizza al taglio.
Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) is the main hub, 32 km from the city center. The Leonardo Express train runs non-stop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes. Ciampino Airport (CIA) serves budget carriers and connects to Termini by bus in about 40 minutes.
The Rome Metro has two main lines (A and B) covering key sites; bus and tram fill the gaps. The historic center around the Colosseum, Trastevere, and Trevi Fountain is best explored on foot. Traffic and taxis are often slow in the center; rideshare (Uber Black) is available though limited. Walking between sites is often faster than any transport option in the historic center.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) are the best times to visit, with comfortable temperatures of 18-25C and manageable crowds. Summer (June-August) is very hot, crowded, and many Romans leave the city in August. November and early December are cool and quiet, with significantly fewer tourists.
