Rochester sits about 30 miles north of downtown Detroit in Oakland County, one of the wealthier and greener parts of the metro. It is a leafy, low-key university town anchored by Oakland University, whose Oakland Center hosts academic conferences, with a genuinely pleasant walkable downtown of restaurants and shops along Main Street and the Paint Creek Trail running through it. The wider area is the heart of Michigan’s automotive engineering and R&D corridor, so hotels lean business-practical. Early October brings crisp fall weather and the start of Michigan’s spectacular autumn color.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), a major Delta hub with wide domestic and international coverage, is about 45-55 minutes south by car. There is no practical transit link, so rent a car or use rideshare from the terminal.
This is a car-and-rideshare part of Michigan; there is no useful transit to Oakland University, so a rental car or Uber/Lyft is the norm. Downtown Rochester is walkable once you are there, and the campus is about 10 minutes from it. Budget for driving between the airport, campus, and hotels.
Late spring through early fall is the pleasant window; early October, when ICMLA meets, is crisp (8-18C) with fall color starting and comfortable days. Winters are cold and snowy; summers warm and humid.
