Recife Brazil
Recife is the largest city of Brazil’s northeast, a coastal metropolis threaded with rivers and bridges that earned it the ‘Venice of Brazil’ nickname. It pairs a historic core, Recife Antigo, with Porto Digital, one of Latin America’s biggest technology parks, which is why it increasingly hosts international computing events. The long beachfront of Boa Viagem holds most of the hotel stock, and the UNESCO-listed colonial hill town of Olinda is 20 minutes away. March brings hot tropical weather at the tail of the dry season, right before the autumn rains.
- Recife Antigo and Marco Zero - the restored old town on its island, with the Kahal Zur Israel synagogue (the Americas’ first) and weekend street life around the square.
- Olinda - the UNESCO-listed colonial hill town next door, all pastel churches and viewpoints over the ocean, 20 minutes by car.
- Boa Viagem beach - the city’s urban beach; swim near lifeguards inside the reef pools at low tide and heed the shark flags.
- Instituto Ricardo Brennand - a castle-like museum with a remarkable collection of Dutch-Brazil art and armory, one of Brazil’s best museums.
Recife/Guararapes International Airport (REC) is remarkably central, about 10 minutes from the Boa Viagem hotel zone. It has direct flights from Lisbon, Madrid, Miami, and Panama City plus dense domestic connections via Sao Paulo and Rio. Ride-hailing from the terminal is easy and cheap.
Ride-hailing (Uber, 99) is cheap, ubiquitous, and the practical default for visitors. The metro connects the airport toward the center but skips the beach zone; taxis and apps cover Boa Viagem. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, so pad travel times. Recife Antigo is walkable once you are there, as is the Boa Viagem beachfront promenade.
September to March is the dry, sunny season with temperatures of 26-31C; the heaviest rains fall April to July. March, when LAK 2027 is held, is hot and mostly dry with warm sea water. Carnival (February dates vary) is spectacular but consumes the city; check the calendar if traveling near it.
