Summary
For conference goers, Rabat offers a welcoming blend of tradition and progress, combining professional venues with historic charm and coastal beauty.
The Hassan Tower and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V are the city’s landmark monuments, set in a vast esplanade in the center of Rabat. The Chellah, a walled necropolis at the southern edge of the medina, has Roman ruins overlaid by a medieval Merenid necropolis - a quietly impressive site. Rabat’s medina is smaller and less chaotic than Fez or Marrakech, with a pleasant Rue des Consuls for browsing crafts. Kasbah des Oudaias at the mouth of the Bou Regreg River has blue-and-white alleyways and an Andalusian garden with Atlantic views. The city is known as quieter and more residential than most Moroccan tourist destinations.
Rabat-Sale Airport (RBA) is 10 km from the city center with bus (Route 17) and taxi connections. Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) is about 1.5 hours by train and is the main international gateway for Morocco, with far more international connections than Rabat.
Rabat has a modern tram network (two lines) running from Sale across the river through the city to the outlying districts. Petits taxis (metered) cover most journeys. The medina and Agdal district are very walkable. The TGV-standard Al Boraq high-speed train connects Rabat to Casablanca in 38 minutes.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal, with mild Atlantic temperatures and low rainfall. Summers are warm and dry with ocean breezes keeping temperatures more moderate than inland Moroccan cities. Winters are mild but can bring rain from the Atlantic.
