Porto Portugal

Porto sits on the north bank of the Douro where it meets the Atlantic, a city of steep hills, granite churches, and tiled facades that has become one of the most visited destinations in Europe without losing the character that made it worth visiting in the first place. The Ribeira district along the riverfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site, lined with restaurants and wine bars under medieval archways. The port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the Dom Luis I bridge, offer cellar tours and tastings above the river. The city’s tile and azulejo culture is extraordinary - the walls of the Sao Bento train station are covered floor to ceiling in blue-and-white tiles depicting Portuguese history, and smaller tile works appear on churches, restaurants, and ordinary building facades throughout the city. Porto has strong academic and technology roots - the University of Porto is one of the largest universities in Portugal - and a growing tech startup scene that has given the city an engaged, internationally-oriented professional community. For conference attendees, the city rewards early mornings (before the tourist crowds) and long evenings, when the Douro glows in the late Atlantic light and the restaurants fill with locals.

What to Do
  • Ribeira district - The UNESCO-listed medieval riverfront quarter is the heart of Porto; best explored on foot in the early morning or early evening.
  • Dom Luis I Bridge - The double-deck iron bridge spanning the Douro offers views of the river, the port wine lodges, and the city from its upper walkway.
  • Port wine lodges, Vila Nova de Gaia - Cross the bridge to the south bank for cellar tours and tastings at Taylor’s, Graham’s, Sandeman, and others; the view back to Porto from the lodge terraces is one of the best in the city.
  • Livraria Lello - One of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, a short walk from the ISC2 venue. Book a timed entry in advance to avoid queues.
  • Sao Bento train station - The azulejo-tiled walls inside the main hall are worth 20 minutes of anyone’s time; free to enter and five minutes from the conference venue.
Getting There

Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO) is 11 km north of the city centre. Metro Line E (Violet) connects directly to Trindade station in the city centre in about 30 minutes for a single fare. Taxis and rideshare take 20-25 minutes.

Getting Around

The Metro do Porto covers the airport, the city centre, and the beach at Matosinhos. Trams still run along the historic lines near the river. Uber and rideshare are widely used. The historic centre is hilly but walkable - comfortable shoes matter more than in most European cities.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) are the best periods, with mild temperatures of 15-22C and manageable crowds. October is an excellent month - wine harvest season ends, fewer tourists than summer, and the light over the Douro is particularly good. Summer is warm (25-30C) and busy.
