Pittsburgh United States

Pittsburgh sits at the confluence of three rivers in western Pennsylvania, a former steel city that has reinvented itself as a hub for technology, healthcare, and academia. Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh anchor a strong research ecosystem, and the downtown cultural district along the Allegheny River is dense with museums, theatres, and restaurants. The David L. Lawrence Convention Center anchors the downtown conference scene, and the city offers excellent value compared to New York, Boston, or San Francisco - hotels and restaurants are noticeably cheaper while the quality is high. Pittsburgh is compact and walkable in the downtown core, with the three rivers and distinctive neighborhood character (Shadyside, Lawrenceville, the Strip District) giving it a distinct identity among US conference cities.

Getting Around

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is 20 miles west of downtown. The 28X Airport Flyer bus runs hourly to downtown for $2.75 - the cheapest option at around 50 minutes. Taxis and rideshares take 25-35 minutes depending on traffic. Downtown Pittsburgh has a free fare zone on the T light rail between First Side and North Shore stations, covering the convention centre area and the stadiums. Uber and Lyft are widely available. The downtown core around the David L. Lawrence Convention Center is walkable - most conference hotels are within 10-15 minutes on foot.

Best Time to Visit

May is one of the best months to visit Pittsburgh - temperatures are pleasant at 11-23C, the city is green, and summer crowds have not yet arrived. The CHI 2027 dates of May 10-14 fall in a good window. Expect some rain and pack a light jacket. July and August are warmer but humid. October is excellent for autumn colour. Winter (December to February) is cold with occasional snow and significantly lower hotel rates.
