Palma de Mallorca Spain

Palma de Mallorca blends the charm of a historic Mediterranean port with the easygoing pace of island life. Gothic architecture rises above narrow stone streets, turquoise water sparkles in the harbor, and the scent of fresh bread and sea air drifts through the city. For a conference traveler, staying a little longer feels almost inevitable. They arrived for the event, but the beauty of the Old Town quickly pulled them in, with its maze of courtyards, boutique shops, and cafes hidden behind centuries-old walls. The towering La Seu Cathedral was a highlight, its intricate stonework and stained glass glowing in the sunlight. Afternoons often led to the waterfront, where the marina bustled with yachts and the promenade made for an easy stroll. A visit to the Mercado de l’Olivar brought fresh seafood, local cheeses, and sweet ensaïmadas, perfect for a quick lunch. Evenings were spent in tapas bars tucked along Passeig des Born or at rooftop terraces of hotels like Nakar or Hotel Saratoga, where the city lights reflected off the bay. For a change of scene, day trips to nearby beaches such as Cala Major or Illetas offered soft sand and clear water just minutes from the city, while guided tours into the Tramuntana Mountains revealed olive groves, hilltop villages, and breathtaking coastal views. Palma rewards those who slow down, offering moments of history, flavor, and scenery that turn a work trip into an island getaway.

What to Do

The Palma Cathedral (La Seu) is one of the great Gothic cathedrals in Europe, with an extraordinary interior modified by Antoni Gaudi in the early 20th century. The old Arab Baths and the Royal Palace of La Almudaina are both within the historic center. Bellver Castle, a circular 14th-century fortress on a wooded hill above the city, has panoramic bay views. The food scene in Palma has become genuinely distinguished, with strong tapas bars, fresh seafood, and a growing farm-to-table scene in the Llotja and Santa Catalina neighborhoods.

Getting There

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is one of the busiest in Spain during the summer season, about 9 km from the city center. EMT Bus Route 1 connects the airport to Plaza d’Espanya in about 30 minutes; taxis and rideshare are available for a 15-20 minute journey.

Getting Around

The city center, Cathedral district, and Old Town are very walkable. EMT buses cover the wider city and coastal areas. Taxis and Cabify (rideshare) are available. Cycling is popular in the flat coastal areas; bike rentals are easy to find.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for Palma - warm and pleasant without the summer heat or crowds. May is particularly good for conferences, with temperatures around 20-25C. July and August are peak tourist season with heat above 35C and very crowded beaches.
