Temescal is Oakland’s most vibrant neighborhood for restaurants - particularly strong for East African, Vietnamese, and modern American cooking. The Oakland Museum of California has excellent natural history and California art collections. Lake Merritt, a tidal lagoon in the center of the city, has walking paths, kayaking, and weekend farmers markets. Jack London Square on the waterfront has a daily market and a cluster of bars and restaurants.
Oakland International Airport (OAK) is a convenient alternative to SFO, about 10 miles from downtown Oakland. The BART AirBART shuttle connects to the Coliseum BART station for direct rail service downtown in about 25 minutes. SFO is also accessible via BART from downtown Oakland in about 40 minutes.
BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is the backbone of Oakland transit, with multiple stations throughout the city connecting to San Francisco in about 15 minutes. AC Transit buses fill in neighborhood gaps. The Temescal and Uptown districts are walkable. Rideshare is widely available.
Oakland is sunnier and warmer than San Francisco due to its position east of the bay. Late spring and early autumn are ideal, with consistently warm and dry weather. Summers are warm with almost no fog. Winter is mild but brings most of the annual rainfall.
