Nottingham United Kingdom

Nottingham is a historic city in the East Midlands of England, known for the Robin Hood legend, its medieval castle and cave network, and a lively city center anchored by the large Old Market Square. It has two substantial universities, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, and a strong research presence in computer science, pharmacy, and engineering that makes it a regular host for academic conferences. The University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus, a modern award-winning campus on the northwest side of the city, is a frequent venue for technical conferences and is connected to the center by the city’s tram network. Nottingham is well placed for travel within the UK, with direct trains to London in about 1 hour 45 minutes and to Birmingham in about 1 hour 15 minutes.

What to Do
  • Nottingham Castle and Caves - The rebuilt ducal mansion on the castle rock, with the City of Caves network of sandstone caves beneath the center.

  • Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem - One of England’s contenders for oldest inn, built into the castle rock and dating to the late medieval period.

  • Wollaton Hall and Deer Park - An Elizabethan mansion in a large deer park, used as a filming location and home to a natural history museum.

  • Sherwood Forest - About 40 minutes north, the historic forest with the ancient Major Oak associated with the Robin Hood legend.

  • Nottingham Contemporary - A well-regarded contemporary art gallery in the Lace Market district, free to enter.

Getting There

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is about 30 minutes from the city by the Skylink bus and serves European destinations and some charter routes. For wider international connectivity, Birmingham Airport (BHX) is about 1 hour by train, and London Heathrow or London St Pancras (via the direct East Midlands train) are both reachable in well under 3 hours.

Getting Around

The city center is walkable and largely pedestrianized. The Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram network connects the rail station, city center, and both the University of Nottingham campuses. Local buses are frequent. The train station is central with direct services across the UK.

Weather & Timing

May to September is most pleasant, with mild temperatures and long evenings. June, when EuroVis is held, typically sees comfortable weather around 18-21C. Winters are grey and damp but rarely severe.
