Nijmegen Netherlands
Nijmegen is generally reckoned the oldest city in the Netherlands, founded as the Roman settlement of Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum. It sits on the south bank of the Waal, the main distributary of the Rhine, about 10 km from the German border and a long way in character from the Randstad cities most visitors see.
It is a university town: Radboud University dominates the intellectual life and gives the city a young population and an active conference calendar in logic, computer science and linguistics. The centre is small, walkable and largely rebuilt, because Nijmegen was bombed by mistake by the Allies in February 1944 and then fought over during Operation Market Garden that September, when the Waal crossing was taken at heavy cost.
The city has expanded north across the river into Nijmegen-Noord, including the district of Lent. That matters for conferences: some venues are on the north bank while essentially all the hotels are on the south.
- Valkhof Park and the Valkhof Museum - The remains of Charlemagne’s palace complex on a bluff above the river, with Roman and medieval collections in the museum below.
- The Waalkade and the bridges - The riverfront, and a walk across the Waalbrug for the view back at the city.
- The Market Garden sites - The 1944 Waal crossing and the surrounding battlefields, with museums at Groesbeek nearby.
- Berg en Dal - Wooded hills just east of the city, unusual terrain for the Netherlands and good for a walk or a ride.
- Cross into Germany - Kleve is under an hour by bus, and a border that barely announces itself is a novelty in itself.
Nijmegen has no airport of its own. Eindhoven (EIN) is the closest at about 65 km, and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the practical choice for long-haul, roughly 110 km away with a direct train to Nijmegen Centraal in about an hour and a half. Dusseldorf (DUS) is a similar distance across the German border and is worth checking for European flights. The train is the normal way in from anywhere in the Netherlands.
The centre is compact and walking covers nearly all of it. Nijmegen Centraal sits just west of the old town. As everywhere in the Netherlands, cycling is the default, and rental is easy and cheap; the city is flat apart from the wooded ridge to the east. Buses cover the north-bank districts across the Waalbrug and the newer De Oversteek bridge. There is no metro or tram.
May to September is the pleasant window, roughly 15 to 25C, with June and September the most comfortable. Winters are grey and wet rather than severe. One date to avoid unless you want it: the Vierdaagse, the International Four Days Marches, fills the city in mid-July. It is the largest walking event in the world, draws tens of thousands of participants and many more spectators, and accommodation for 50 km around is booked out months ahead at raised prices.

Nijmegen has a small hotel stock and nearly all of it is in the Stadscentrum, between the station and the Waalkade. That area is walkable to the old town, the restaurants and the station, and is the right default for most visits. The exception is a conference on the north bank in Lent, where the Van der Valk is the only hotel actually at the venue and everything else is a 2 km trip across the river. Book early regardless: the stock is genuinely small for a city of this size, and it empties completely around the July Vierdaagse.
