Newark United States

Newark, Delaware is a mid-sized university town defined by the University of Delaware campus that stretches through its centre. Main Street runs adjacent to the campus and has a lively strip of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops catering to the large student population. The city sits in the I-95 corridor, placing it equidistant between Philadelphia (around 45 minutes) and Baltimore (around 60 minutes), which makes it accessible from two major airport hubs. Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city and an Amtrak station, is about 10 miles north. Delaware has no state sales tax, which applies to purchases made in Newark. The city is primarily a walking and driving destination - the campus and Main Street are compact, but getting to Philadelphia or the wider region requires a car or DART bus to Wilmington for Amtrak connections.

What to Do

The University of Delaware campus is attractive and worth a walk. The Brandywine Valley, 10-20 minutes north into Pennsylvania, has the Brandywine River Museum of Art (Andrew Wyeth collection) and Longwood Gardens, one of the great horticultural estates on the east coast. Wilmington, 10 miles north, has the Delaware Art Museum and the Christina Riverfront district for dining. Philadelphia is a practical half-day or evening trip with extensive museums, the Reading Terminal Market, and Independence Hall.

Getting There

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the primary hub, around 30-45 minutes by car or via SEPTA regional rail to Philadelphia and then Amtrak south. Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) is around 75 minutes by car. Newark Liberty International (EWR) in New Jersey is around 2 hours.

Getting Around

Newark is primarily a car and walking city. The University of Delaware campus and Main Street are walkable. DART Bus Route 55 connects Newark to Wilmington (Amtrak). Uber and Lyft are available. A car is practical for reaching Philadelphia Airport or exploring the wider Brandywine Valley area.

Weather & Timing

September and October are excellent, with warm days, low humidity, and good foliage in the surrounding Brandywine Valley. Spring (April-May) is also pleasant. Summer is warm and humid; winter is cold with occasional snow.
