New Orleans United States
New Orleans is a small city with an outsized character, built on a bend of the Mississippi and shaped by French, Spanish, Caribbean and West African influences that show up in the architecture, the food and the music. For a conference visitor the practical shape is simple: the French Quarter, the Central Business District and the Warehouse District sit next to each other along the river, and the convention centre anchors the downriver end of that strip.
It is a city where the evenings are the point. Live music runs seven nights a week, the restaurant scene is genuinely distinctive rather than merely good, and almost everything you would want to do after sessions is within walking distance of the convention district. That makes it an unusually easy conference city to enjoy without planning.
- French Quarter - the oldest part of the city, and worth walking early in the morning when it is quiet and the light is good. Royal Street rather than Bourbon Street if you want the architecture.
- Frenchmen Street - where locals go for live music, a few blocks downriver from the Quarter and much better than Bourbon for it.
- National WWII Museum - in the Warehouse District, a few minutes from the convention centre, and genuinely one of the best museums in the United States.
- Garden District - take the St Charles streetcar out and walk back through the antebellum houses and Lafayette Cemetery.
- Cafe du Monde - beignets and chicory coffee, open around the clock, touristy and still worth it once.
- A swamp tour - the one thing genuinely unavailable anywhere else; half-day trips leave from downtown.
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY) is 18 km west of downtown. The terminal was rebuilt in 2019 and is straightforward. Options into town are a rideshare or taxi in 25 to 40 minutes, the airport shuttle, or the Jefferson Parish E2 bus, which is very cheap but slow and ends at a downtown transit centre. There is no rail link. Domestic connections are good; from outside North America you will normally change at Atlanta, Dallas, Houston or Charlotte.
Walk for the French Quarter, CBD and Warehouse District, which is most of what you need. The streetcars are the pleasant option for longer hops: the St Charles line runs through the Garden District and the Riverfront and Canal Street lines serve the convention district. Buy a Jazzy Pass for unlimited rides if you will use them more than twice a day. Rideshare is cheap and plentiful. A car is not useful: parking downtown is expensive and the one-way street grid in the Quarter is hostile. Take normal city precautions walking at night, particularly away from the busy streets.
November, when KubeCon runs, is arguably the best month of the New Orleans year: 15 to 23C, low humidity, dry, and comfortably past the peak of the hurricane season. Spring is the other good window, though late winter and early spring bring Mardi Gras and the Jazz Fest, when the city fills and rates multiply. Summer is the one to avoid: June to September is hot and very humid, routinely over 32C with afternoon thunderstorms, and it overlaps the most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season.

1 upcoming conference in New Orleans
Stay in the Warehouse District or the lower CBD, around the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. All five hotels we list are within 700 m of it: the Hampton Inn & Suites is effectively across the street at 192 m, the Hilton Garden Inn and Hyatt Place are both around 350 m, the Marriott Warehouse Arts District is 514 m, and the Embassy Suites on Julia Street is 681 m with suites that suit longer stays. Note that KubeCon 2027 has not announced its venue, so these distances are measured from the convention centre as the city’s only hall of that size rather than from a confirmed address. The Warehouse District is the right base regardless: it is walkable to the Quarter, full of restaurants and galleries, and quieter at night than the Quarter itself. Rates are moderate in November but rise steeply for Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest, so check what else is in town before assuming a price.
