New Delhi India
New Delhi is India’s capital, a sprawling metropolis of over 30 million in its wider region that mixes Mughal monuments, colonial-era boulevards, and one of the country’s strongest research ecosystems. IIT Delhi in the leafy south of the city anchors much of the conference activity, with the Hauz Khas and Green Park neighborhoods nearby offering good food and accommodation. Winters (December to February) are the pleasant season and the peak of the conference calendar, though air quality can be poor in early winter.
- Humayun’s Tomb and Lodhi Gardens - the Mughal garden-tomb that inspired the Taj, and the city’s most beloved park, both in south-central Delhi.
- Old Delhi - Jama Masjid, the Red Fort, and the food lanes of Chandni Chowk; go with an empty stomach and a full battery.
- Hauz Khas Village - medieval ruins around a lake ringed by cafes and galleries, walking distance from IIT Delhi.
- Qutub Minar - the 73-meter 12th-century victory tower, a UNESCO site in the city’s south.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is one of Asia’s busiest hubs with direct flights worldwide. The Airport Express metro line reaches the center in about 20 minutes, and prepaid taxis and ride-hailing are available around the clock. Most conference areas in south Delhi are 30 to 60 minutes from the airport by road.
The Delhi Metro is extensive, cheap, and by far the best way to move around; the Yellow and Magenta lines serve the IIT Delhi and Hauz Khas area. Ride-hailing (Uber, Ola) is ubiquitous and inexpensive. Auto-rickshaws work for short hops; agree the fare or insist on the meter. Traffic is heavy, so allow buffer time for anything cross-town.
October to March is the comfortable window, with December and January cool (5-20C) and dry. Avoid April to June, when temperatures exceed 40C, and the July to September monsoon. Note that November and December can bring severe air pollution episodes; sensitive travelers should pack a mask.
