Naples Italy
Naples is a port city on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy and the capital of Campania, with one of the most densely packed and architecturally rich historic centres in Europe, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is the birthplace of pizza and the centre of one of Italy’s strongest food traditions, and it sits at the gateway to the Bay of Naples region with Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast all within easy day-trip reach. Naples is home to the University of Naples Federico II, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1224, with a large engineering and computer science research presence. Naples International Airport (NAP) is just 7 km from the city centre, with direct connections across Europe and growing long-haul service.
-
Pompeii and Herculaneum - The two great Roman archaeological sites destroyed by the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, both reachable in under 40 minutes by the Circumvesuviana line.
-
Mount Vesuvius - The crater rim is reachable by guided tour, with a short hike from the parking area to the summit.
-
Naples historic centre - The Spaccanapoli street, the Cathedral of San Gennaro, and the cloisters of Santa Chiara are highlights of the UNESCO-listed centre.
-
Capri and the Amalfi Coast - Day-trip destinations by ferry or hydrofoil from the port; Capri is about 50 minutes by hydrofoil.
-
Pizza in Naples - The original Neapolitan pizza is a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage; the historic pizzerias of Da Michele, Gino e Toto Sorbillo, and Di Matteo are the most famous.
Naples International Airport (NAP) is only 7 km from the central station and city centre, the closest major airport to its city in Italy. The Alibus airport shuttle runs to Piazza Garibaldi (Naples Centrale) and the port in about 15-20 minutes for around 5 EUR. Direct flights connect Naples to most major European cities; intercontinental arrivals typically route via Rome (FCO) or Milan (MXP), both about 1 hour by domestic flight or under 1.5 hours from Rome by high-speed rail.
Naples has an extensive metro network anchored by Line 1, with several stations recognized internationally for their art installations. Trams, buses, and the funicular railways reach the hillside Vomero district. The Circumvesuviana commuter line connects to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Sorrento. Walking is essential in the historic centre, where streets are too narrow for most vehicles. Taxi rides are inexpensive but should be metered.
May, June, and September are the best months for Naples, with warm sunny weather and lower crowds than the July-August peak. September, when ECML PKDD is held, is one of the best times to visit with comfortable temperatures around 24-28C and reasonable hotel rates.
