Minneapolis United States
Minneapolis sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minnesota, paired with its smaller twin Saint Paul across the river. It is the largest city in the Upper Midwest and one of the most livable mid-sized cities in the United States, with a strong arts infrastructure, a serious food scene, and a distinctive indoor pedestrian Skyway network connecting 80 blocks of downtown buildings - useful during cold conference seasons. The city has a high concentration of Fortune 500 companies including Target, Best Buy, and US Bancorp, giving it a professional and tech-savvy character.
The downtown core is compact and walkable in good weather, with Nicollet Mall as the main pedestrian spine connecting hotels, restaurants, and the convention facilities. The North Loop neighbourhood northwest of downtown is the most interesting for evenings - converted warehouse buildings hosting independent restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. The riverfront around the Stone Arch Bridge offers views of Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi.
The Walker Art Center is one of the leading contemporary art museums in the US, with an attached sculpture garden featuring the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry. The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) has a 90,000-piece collection spanning 5,000 years and is free admission. The Chain of Lakes - a connected series of urban lakes southwest of downtown - is ideal for running, cycling, and kayaking. First Avenue, the iconic music venue on 7th Street, is one of the best live music rooms in the country and famously associated with Prince. The North Loop neighbourhood has the best restaurant density for a conference dinner: Spoon and Stable, Ono, and Bar La Grassa are all strong picks. The Weisman Art Museum on the UMN campus is a striking Frank Gehry building worth seeing from the outside. Mall of America in nearby Bloomington is 20 minutes from downtown by Blue Line.
Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is about 12 miles south of downtown and is one of Delta Air Lines’ major hubs, with direct connections to most US cities and international routes to Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. The Blue Line light rail (Metro Transit) runs directly from the airport Terminal 1 station to downtown Minneapolis, taking about 25 minutes to the Nicollet Mall stop for USD 2.50. Taxis and rideshare are also widely available from both terminals.
The Skyway system - 9.5 miles of enclosed, climate-controlled pedestrian bridges connecting 80 downtown blocks - is the most useful thing to know for conference attendees. It links the Marriott City Center and most downtown hotels directly to nearby venues, restaurants, and Target Center without going outside. The Metro Blue and Green light rail lines cover the airport, downtown, and the University of Minnesota. City buses fill the gaps. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is well served. Biking is popular in good weather via the Nice Ride system and extensive trail network.
Late summer and fall are ideal for Minneapolis: August through October brings comfortable temperatures (15-25C), lower humidity than midsummer, and the start of fall foliage which peaks in late September and early October. RecSys 2026 in late September falls right in this window - likely the best week of the year to visit. Winters are genuinely cold (regularly below -15C) and long, but the Skyway system makes downtown navigation surprisingly manageable. Spring (April-May) is pleasant but wet.
