Milan Italy
Milan is the centre of Italian finance, fashion and design, and the least postcard-like of the country’s major cities. It is a place that works: efficient, businesslike, expensive, and more comfortable to operate in than Rome or Naples if you are here to attend something rather than to sightsee.
The historic core is compact, wrapped around the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and can be walked in an afternoon. Most of what a conference visitor needs sits inside or just outside the inner ring, with the exception of the universities: Politecnico di Milano, Italy’s largest technical university, has its main campus in Citta Studi, about 3 km east of the Duomo.
Milan is also the best-connected city in Italy for onward travel. High-speed trains reach Turin in an hour, Bologna in an hour, Florence in under two and Rome in about three, which makes it an easy base for extending a trip.
- The Duomo and its roof - The cathedral is the obvious stop, and the roof terraces among the spires are the part worth paying for.
- The Last Supper - Leonardo’s mural at Santa Maria delle Grazie. Tickets are limited, timed and sell out weeks or months ahead, so book before you travel or you will not see it.
- Pinacoteca di Brera - The major art collection, in a handsome quarter that is pleasant to walk in its own right.
- Castello Sforzesco - The Sforza castle and its museums, with a large park behind it.
- Navigli - The canal district southwest of the centre, the place to eat and drink in the evening.
- Day trips - Lake Como is about an hour by train, and Turin, Bologna and Verona are all comfortably reachable and back in a day.
Milan has three airports. Malpensa (MXP) handles most long-haul traffic and is about 50 km northwest, roughly 50 minutes on the Malpensa Express train to Cadorna or Centrale. Linate (LIN) is much closer at about 8 km east, mostly European and domestic, and is now on the M4 metro line straight into the centre, which has made it the far more convenient arrival. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is about 50 km northeast and serves low-cost carriers, reached by coach.
The metro is the thing to use: four lines, clean and frequent, with M2 (green) serving Politecnico at Piola and Lambrate. Trams fill the gaps and some of the older ones are worth riding for their own sake. The centre is walkable, but the distance from the Duomo out to Citta Studi is a metro ride rather than a stroll. Tickets cover metro, tram and bus together, and a car is a liability here.
April to June and September to October are the comfortable windows, roughly 18 to 27C. August is the month to understand before booking. It is hot, often humid, and Milan empties for the summer holidays, with a great many restaurants and independent shops closed for two or three weeks around Ferragosto in mid-month. Things reopen through the last week of August, so a late-August visit is workable but quieter and more limited than the same week in June. Winter is grey, cold and frequently foggy.

Most visitors should stay in or near the historic centre, between the Duomo, Brera and Porta Venezia, which puts the sights, the restaurants and several metro lines within reach. Porta Nuova and Centrale suit rail arrivals and are well connected but less charming. Navigli is the choice if evenings matter more than mornings.
For a conference at Politecnico, note that the campus is in Citta Studi, about 3 km east of the Duomo. Staying centrally means a short M2 ride each morning, which is the normal trade-off here and usually the right one, since Citta Studi itself is a quiet residential and university district with far less around it in the evening.
