Marbella Spain

Marbella combines the glamour of the Costa del Sol with the relaxed pace of a seaside town. Whitewashed streets wind through the Old Town, opening onto bright plazas filled with orange trees and café tables, while golden beaches stretch along the sparkling Mediterranean. For a conference traveler, it is the kind of place where arriving early or staying on after the event feels less like an indulgence and more like a necessity. They spent mornings wandering through Plaza de los Naranjos, stopping for coffee in the shade before exploring the small boutiques and art galleries nearby. Afternoons were often spent along the Paseo Marítimo, a palm-lined promenade where the sea breeze carried the scent of grilled fish from beachfront chiringuitos. For a touch of luxury, the marina at Puerto Banús offered designer shops, waterfront dining, and the sight of yachts moored side by side. Evenings could mean fresh seafood at a traditional Andalusian restaurant or cocktails at rooftop lounges in hotels like the Amàre Beach Hotel or Nobu Marbella. A short drive into the hills led to charming white villages such as Mijas and Ronda, each with its own stunning views and quiet streets. Marbella blends the energy of a resort destination with the charm of a coastal town, turning a business trip into a sun-soaked escape.

What to Do

The Old Town (Casco Antiguo) of Marbella is an attractive whitewashed Andalusian village wrapped around the Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square) - far removed from the resort development elsewhere. Puerto Banus, 6 km west, is the famous marina with luxury yachts, designer boutiques, and beach clubs. The Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo (Contemporary Spanish Engraving Museum) in the historic center has an unexpectedly strong collection. The beach promenade (paseo maritimo) stretches 27 km along the coast with dedicated cycling and walking paths. Day trips to Ronda (a dramatic inland town built on a gorge, 1 hour away) and Gibraltar (1.5 hours) are popular.

Getting There

Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is about 60 km west of Marbella and is the main gateway for the Costa del Sol. No train connects the airport to Marbella; taxis and rideshare take about 40-50 minutes. Bus services (Portillo, ALSA) also connect the airport to Marbella bus station.

Getting Around

The city center and Old Town (Casco Antiguo) are very walkable. Marbella has a local bus network (Marbella Bus) covering the municipality. Taxis are widely available. The Golden Mile coastal strip between Marbella and Puerto Banus is best navigated by taxi or rideshare. A car is useful for exploring the wider Costa del Sol.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are excellent for Marbella, with warm temperatures of 20-26C and fewer crowds than peak summer. Summers (July-August) are very hot, very busy, and expensive. November to March is quiet with mild temperatures and almost guaranteed sunshine by Andalusian standards.
