Madrid Spain

Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city, set on a high plateau in the geographic center of the country. It is best known for one of the greatest concentrations of art in the world, with the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza forming a golden triangle of museums within a few minutes’ walk of each other. Beyond the galleries, Madrid is a city of grand plazas, the vast Retiro park, the Royal Palace, and a famously late and lively street life built around tapas bars and long dinners. The historic neighborhoods of La Latina, Lavapies, and Malasana each have their own character, and the food scene runs from century-old taverns to modern markets like San Miguel. For conference travelers it is well connected, easy to navigate by metro, and an easy base for day trips to Toledo, Segovia, and other historic towns nearby.

What to Do
  • The art triangle - The Prado, the Reina Sofia (home to Picasso’s Guernica), and the Thyssen-Bornemisza sit within a short walk of each other.
  • Retiro Park - The city’s grand green space, with a boating lake, the glass Crystal Palace, and shaded paths.
  • Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor - The historic heart of the city, with the largest royal palace in Western Europe.
  • Tapas in La Latina - The classic Madrid evening, hopping between bars along Cava Baja.
  • Day trip to Toledo - The medieval former capital is about 30 minutes away by high-speed train.
Getting There

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is about 12 km northeast of the center and is the main gateway to Spain. Metro Line 8 runs from the terminals to the city in around 30 minutes, with Cercanias commuter trains and airport buses as alternatives. Taxis to the center are a fixed fare and take 20 to 30 minutes.

Getting Around

Madrid has one of the largest and cheapest metro systems in Europe, with more than a dozen lines reaching almost everywhere in the city, including the airport and the university campuses. The center is compact and very walkable, and a dense bus network fills the gaps. A rechargeable Tarjeta Multi or contactless payment covers the metro and buses, and taxis and rideshare are widely available.

Weather & Timing

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant, with warm sunny days and cool evenings. July, when ITiCSE is held, is hot and dry, often above 35C, so plan for the heat and the Spanish habit of a long midday break. Winters are mild but can be cold at night.
