Lucca Italy
Lucca sits in a broad valley of the Serchio River in northern Tuscany, encircled by some of the best-preserved Renaissance city walls in Europe. The walls date from the 16th century and are wide enough at the top to have been planted with trees and turned into a 4.2 km public promenade - walking or cycling the full circuit is the defining Lucca experience and takes about an hour at a relaxed pace. Inside the walls, the medieval street plan is almost entirely intact. The Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is the most remarkable space in the city: a perfect oval of medieval buildings constructed directly on the footprint of a Roman amphitheatre, its curved facades following the original seating tiers. The Duomo di San Martino contains one of Tuscany’s finest collections of Romanesque sculpture, and the Torre Guinigi is a 14th-century tower with a cluster of oak trees growing from the top. Lucca is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini; the Puccini Museum occupies his childhood home near the church of San Michele. For a conference traveler, the city is compact and entirely walkable - the IMT Campus at San Ponziano, the main hotels, and the best restaurants are all within 10 minutes on foot. Pisa is 22 km west and easily reached by train in about 30 minutes, making it a good day trip or arrival point. Florence is 90 minutes by regional train and worth the journey for anyone extending their stay.
The city walls (Mura di Lucca) are the defining attraction: a wide, tree-lined promenade along the top of the 16th-century ramparts that encircles the entire old city. Bike rental is available at several points along the walls and the full circuit takes about 45 minutes. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is a Roman oval repurposed as a medieval square and one of the most photogenic spaces in Tuscany; ideal for an evening aperitivo. The Torre Guinigi, with its famous rooftop oak trees, gives a good view over the city. The Puccini Museum on Corte San Lorenzo covers the birthplace and life of the composer. For day trips, Pisa and its Campo dei Miracoli are 30 minutes by train; Florence is 90 minutes and worth the journey.
Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) is the nearest airport, 22 km west of Lucca. Regional trains connect Pisa Centrale to Lucca in about 30 minutes; a taxi takes around 25 minutes. Florence Airport (FLR) is also served by many European carriers; trains from Florence to Lucca take about 90 minutes with one change at Pisa.
Lucca’s historic centre is compact and almost entirely pedestrianised; everything within the walls is walkable. Bike rental is very popular and the ideal way to circle the city ramparts. Regional trains run frequently to Pisa (30 min) and Florence (90 min). For the conference venue at IMT Campus, everything is within 15 minutes on foot from any hotel inside the walls.
April to June and September to October are the best months: temperatures of 18-25C, manageable crowds, and long evenings. May is particularly well-suited to a conference visit. July and August are hot (often above 35C) and busy with summer tourism. Winters are cool and quiet, with temperatures around 5-10C.
