Lodz Poland

Lodz (pronounced ‘Woodge’) grew explosively as the ‘Polish Manchester,’ and its vast 19th-century mills now house galleries, hotels, and the Manufaktura complex, one of Europe’s great adaptive-reuse projects. Piotrkowska Street runs four kilometers through the center lined with cafes and street art, the film school that trained Polanski and Kieslowski gives the city its creative streak, and prices are gentle even by Polish standards. Lodz University of Technology hosts ICSOC 2026 in December, when the Christmas lights soften the brick.

What to Do
  • Manufaktura - the colossal red-brick mill complex of museums, restaurants, and the ms2 art collection.
  • Piotrkowska Street - the endless promenade; rickshaws are the local way to cover it.
  • EC1 - the old power station turned science center and planetarium, by the striking Fabryczna station.
  • Street art hunt - the city’s giant murals are world-known; maps at the tourist office.
Getting There

Lodz airport (LCJ) has limited routes; Warsaw Chopin (WAW), 90 minutes to 2 hours by train or car, is the practical international gateway.

Getting Around

Trams are the backbone and Piotrkowska is best on foot or by bike-share; Bolt/Uber are cheap. Trains reach Warsaw in about 75 minutes.

Weather & Timing

May to September is warm and green (18-26C). December, when ICSOC visits, is cold (around 0C) with Christmas markets on Piotrkowska; pack properly and enjoy the season.
