Linköping Sweden

Linköping sits in Östergötland in southern Sweden, built around a 12th-century cathedral and, more recently, around Linköping University and the Saab aerospace works. The university is one of Sweden’s larger technical institutions and gives the city a young population and a strong research presence in computing and security, which is why it hosts conferences well out of proportion to its size. The centre is small, flat and walkable, arranged around Stora Torget and the Stångån river, and the whole place can be crossed on foot in about twenty minutes.

What to Do
  • Gamla Linköping - A large open-air museum of relocated wooden buildings laid out as a working 19th-century town, with shops and a bakery still operating, a short walk west of the centre.
  • Linköping Cathedral - One of Sweden’s largest medieval churches, begun in the 12th century, in the middle of the old town.
  • Flygvapenmuseum - The Swedish Air Force Museum at Malmen, with a Cold War hall built around a shot-down DC-3 recovered from the Baltic; unusually good for a regional museum.
  • Trädgårdsföreningen - The city garden park, a pleasant walk between the centre and the southern hotels.
  • Göta Canal at Berg - A staircase of locks about 20 minutes north, worth a half day in summer.
Getting There

Most visitors fly into Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) and take the train, which runs to Linköping in about two hours with a change at Stockholm Central. Linköping has its own small City Airport (LPI) with limited service. Skavsta (NYO), used by low-cost carriers, is about an hour and a half by bus. Copenhagen (CPH) is a longer but comfortable train ride and often has better long-haul connections.

Getting Around

Everything central is walkable and the city is flat, which is why bicycles are everywhere; the centre, the station and the concert hall are all within about ten minutes of each other on foot. City buses cover the university campus at Valla, roughly 3 km south-west of the centre. Tickets are bought through the Östgötatrafiken app. You will not need a car.

Weather & Timing

May to August, when Sweden gets its long light evenings and temperatures sit around 20C. Late August, when ARES runs, still catches the warmth but the students are back and the city feels busier. September and October are cool and pleasant. Winter is dark and cold, with sunset before 3pm in December.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Linköping is small enough that the choice is simple: stay in the centre, between Stora Torget and the railway station, and you can walk to the concert hall, the cathedral and the restaurants in a few minutes. The hotels immediately around the main square are the most convenient, while those by the station suit early trains and those south towards Trädgårdsföreningen are quieter and slightly cheaper. The university campus at Valla is a bus ride out and has little accommodation of its own, so there is no reason to base yourself there. Rates are moderate by Swedish standards but the city has limited stock, so a conference week can genuinely fill it.
