Kolkata India
Kolkata, the former capital of British India, is the cultural and intellectual heart of the country’s east: home to the Indian Statistical Institute, Jadavpur University, and a literary cafe culture that takes its adda (conversation) seriously. Conference activity increasingly happens in New Town, the planned tech district near the airport where the IIT Kharagpur Research Park and several modern hotels cluster, while the historic center offers colonial architecture, tram lines, and some of India’s best food. December, the peak conference month, is also the city’s most pleasant season.
- Victoria Memorial and the Maidan - the white-marble monument and the vast central park, best at golden hour.
- College Street - the world’s largest second-hand book market, plus the Indian Coffee House, an institution of student debate.
- Kumartuli - the potters’ quarter where the goddess idols for Durga Puja are sculpted year-round.
- Park Street food crawl - from kathi rolls at Kusum to continental classics at decades-old institutions; Kolkata biryani (with the potato) is mandatory.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) has wide domestic connectivity and direct international links across Asia and the Gulf. It sits right next to New Town, so venue-district hotels are often under 20 minutes away; the city center is 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.
The metro network is expanding fast and the airport line serves the New Town area; ride-hailing (Uber, Ola, Rapido) is cheap and the default for visitors. The iconic yellow Ambassador taxis and India’s last tram network are experiences more than transport. New Town itself is spread out, so plan on short cab hops between venues and hotels.
November to February is ideal: dry, sunny days of 20-28C and the city in festival mode. The monsoon (June to September) is heavy, and April-May is hot and humid. December visitors should book early around Christmas week, which Kolkata celebrates enthusiastically on Park Street.
