Koli Finland

Koli is a small resort area within Koli National Park in the North Karelia region of eastern Finland, known for the dramatic views from its rocky hilltops over the lakes and forests below, a landscape that has inspired Finnish painters and composers for over a century. It is a quiet, scenic place built around outdoor activity and a handful of resort hotels rather than a town. The nearest city is Joensuu, about 60 km to the south, with the regional airport and train connections. For conference visitors Koli offers an unusually peaceful setting surrounded by nature.

What to Do
  • Ukko-Koli summit - The iconic hilltop viewpoint over Lake Pielinen, the most painted view in Finland.
  • Koli National Park trails - Marked hiking routes through old forest and across the hills.
  • Lake Pielinen - Boating and the summer ferry across the lake.
  • Winter sports - Skiing and snowshoeing from the Koli slopes.
Getting There

Joensuu Airport (JOE) is about 70 km south with connections to Helsinki. Many visitors fly to Helsinki and take a train to Joensuu (about 4.5 hours), then continue to Koli by bus or taxi.

Getting Around

Koli is small and centered on its resort hotels and national park trails, all within walking distance of each other, and there is no public transport within Koli itself. Most visitors arrive via Joensuu, about 60 km south, and reach Koli by bus, taxi, or rental car.

Weather & Timing

Summer (June to August) brings long days and green hiking trails, and autumn shows the famous Finnish ruska colors. November, when Koli Calling is held, is cold and often snowy, the start of winter, so pack warm clothing.
