Karlsruhe Germany

Karlsruhe is a city in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, laid out in the 18th century in a distinctive fan shape radiating from its central palace. It is one of Germany’s leading technology cities, anchored by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of the country’s top technical universities, and a dense cluster of research institutes and IT companies. It is also Germany’s judicial capital, seat of the Federal Constitutional Court. The ZKM Center for Art and Media, housed in a vast former munitions factory, is one of the world’s foremost media-art museums. For conference travelers the city is compact, well organized, and connected to the Frankfurt and Stuttgart airports by fast trains.

What to Do
  • Karlsruhe Palace - The baroque palace at the center of the fan, with the Baden State Museum and gardens.
  • ZKM Center for Art and Media - One of the world’s leading media-art museums, in a huge former factory.
  • The Marktplatz and pyramid - The city’s central square with its unusual red sandstone pyramid.
  • Turmberg - A funicular up to views over the city and the Rhine plain.
  • Day trips - Baden-Baden’s spas and the northern Black Forest are close by.
Getting There

Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) is about 40 km west with mostly budget European routes. Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Germany’s main hub, is about an hour away by direct ICE train, and Stuttgart Airport (STR) is also within reach.

Getting Around

Karlsruhe has an extensive tram and light-rail network (KVV) that famously runs onto regional rail lines, covering the city and surroundings densely. The center is compact and walkable, and cycling is popular. A single ticket system covers trams and buses.

Weather & Timing

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the most pleasant, with warm days. October, when IMC is held, is mild and often clear. Winters are grey and cool but rarely severe.

Where to Stay for a Conference

Karlsruhe is small and the university is right against the centre. The KIT Audimax is about 1.2 km from the middle of town, and our five hotels sit between roughly 0.9 and 2.4 km from it, so everything is a walk or one tram stop. The city centre around the Marktplatz and the palace is the sensible base, close to both the campus and the restaurants, with the Hauptbahnhof options a little further south. Karlsruhe’s tram network is unusually good for a city this size and runs on to the surrounding towns. Supply is limited, because this is a city of 300,000 rather than a conference destination, so a large event tightens things quickly and Stuttgart is about an hour away if it does.
