Ioannina Greece

Ioannina is one of Greece’s most distinctive cities, set dramatically on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis in the Epirus region. Unlike the sun-drenched islands most visitors imagine, Ioannina has a cool, atmospheric quality shaped by its mountain setting, its Ottoman past, and its lakeside setting. The walled Old City, known as the Kastro, contains mosques, Byzantine ruins, and the tomb of Ali Pasha — the infamous Ottoman ruler who made Ioannina his court. A short boat ride across the lake leads to the small island of Nissi, where a monastery marks the site where Ali Pasha was killed in 1822. The city has long been home to a distinguished Jewish community and a vibrant silversmithing tradition that continues today. For conference travelers, the University of Ioannina brings intellectual energy to the city, and the surrounding region offers hiking in the Pindus mountains, the stunning Vikos Gorge one of the deepest in the world — and traditional stone villages like Metsovo and the Zagorochoria. The local cuisine leans toward hearty Epirote dishes: pita pastries filled with greens, cheese, and meat, roasted lamb, and warming bean soups. Evenings are spent along the lakefront promenade, watching the lights of the Kastro reflect in the water. Ioannina is a city that rewards those who venture beyond the well-worn Greek trail.

What to Do

The island in Lake Pamvotis is a 10-minute ferry ride from the city and contains a small monastery complex where Ali Pasha of Ioannina (the “Lion of Ioannina”) was assassinated in 1822 - the rooms where he was killed are preserved as a museum. The Byzantine Museum and the Municipal Ethnographic Museum in the Aslan Pasha Mosque (on the island) have strong regional collections. The old bazaar area of the city is known for silver crafting, a local tradition for centuries. Ioannina is the gateway to the Zagori region - one of the most scenic mountain landscapes in Greece, with the Vikos Gorge (one of the world’s deepest) and the stone bridge villages of Papingo.

Getting There

Ioannina National Airport (IOA) is 5 km from the city center, with flights from Athens (50 minutes). Taxis are the main transport option from the airport. Road connections from Athens take about 5-6 hours through mountainous terrain.

Getting Around

Ioannina city is served by KTEL buses and taxis. The lakeside city center, the old bazaar, and the historic island in Lake Pamvotis are all accessible on foot or by local ferry. A car is useful for exploring the Zagori villages and Vikos Gorge in the surrounding mountains.

Weather & Timing

Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal for Ioannina, with pleasant temperatures and access to the surrounding mountains. Summers are warm but cooler than coastal Greece due to the altitude. Winters can be cold and foggy - the lake setting makes the city atmospheric in all seasons.
